Why SSL Matters

HTTPS Isn't Optional Anymore

Google, Chrome, and your visitors all require SSL. Here's what you gain — and what you risk without it.

Encryption in Transit

SSL/TLS encrypts all data between your visitor's browser and your server. Without it, passwords, form data, and personal information are transmitted in plaintext — readable by anyone on the network path.

Google Ranking Signal

Google confirmed HTTPS as a ranking factor in 2014. Sites without SSL rank lower in search results. If you care about organic traffic, SSL is not optional — it is table stakes for SEO in 2025.

Browser Trust Indicators

Chrome, Firefox, and Safari all show "Not Secure" warnings on HTTP sites. Studies show over 82% of users immediately leave a site that shows a security warning. SSL keeps visitors engaged.

Business Credibility

The padlock icon in the browser signals your site is legitimate. For e-commerce, finance, and professional services, SSL (especially EV certificates) directly affects conversion rates and customer trust.

Compliance Requirements

PCI DSS requires SSL for all sites that process card payments. GDPR recommends encryption of data in transit. Many enterprise procurement processes require HTTPS as a baseline security standard.

HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 Speed

Modern HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 protocols — which dramatically speed up page loads — only work over HTTPS. An SSL certificate is the prerequisite to getting the performance benefits of the modern web.

Certificate Types

DV vs OV vs EV vs Wildcard — What's the Difference?

All SSL certificates encrypt traffic. The difference is in what gets verified and who is backing the certificate with a warranty.

Domain Validated (DV)

The Certificate Authority verifies you control the domain — nothing more. Issued in minutes. This is what Let's Encrypt provides for free, and what our Standard DV commercial certificate offers. Perfect for blogs, portfolios, SaaS tools, and most websites.

Organization Validated (OV)

The CA verifies your domain AND your organization's legal existence. Takes 1-3 business days. Your company name appears in the certificate details. Suitable for corporate sites, B2B platforms, and government agencies. Available on request — contact sales.

Extended Validation (EV)

The highest level of certificate trust. The CA conducts thorough vetting of your legal entity, physical address, and operational existence. Your company name is displayed prominently in some browsers. Recommended for banks, fintech, legal firms, and any site handling sensitive financial data. Comes with a €250,000 warranty.

Wildcard SSL

A single certificate that covers your root domain AND all first-level subdomains (*.yourdomain.com). One Wildcard certificate replaces separate certificates for app.yourdomain.com, api.yourdomain.com, admin.yourdomain.com, and so on. Ideal for SaaS products, multi-tenant applications, and complex web architectures.

Getting Started

How SSL Installation Works on Soelem

For hosting customers, SSL is zero-configuration. For standalone certificates, here is the process.

1

Automatic for Hosting Customers

If your site is hosted on any Soelem hosting plan, free Let's Encrypt SSL is automatically installed and renewed. No action required — your site loads as https:// from day one.

0 minutes
2

Order a Commercial Certificate

For Standard DV, Wildcard, or EV certificates, place your order. For DV, verification is instant via DNS or HTTP. For EV, we guide you through the organization verification process — typically 1-3 business days.

5 min — 3 days
3

Installation & Auto-Renewal

We install the certificate on your server. For Soelem-hosted sites, this is fully automated. Auto-renewal handles expiry before it becomes a problem — you will never see a certificate expired warning.

FAQ

SSL Certificates — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about SSL, HTTPS, and certificate management.

  • An SSL/TLS certificate enables HTTPS on your website — it encrypts all communication between your server and your visitors' browsers. Yes, you absolutely need one. Without HTTPS, Chrome and Firefox show "Not Secure" warnings, Google penalises your search rankings, and visitors' browsers may block form submissions. Free SSL is included with all Soelem hosting plans, so there is no excuse not to have it.

  • Technically, free Let's Encrypt SSL and paid commercial DV certificates provide identical encryption (256-bit TLS 1.3). The key differences are: (1) Warranty — paid certificates come with a financial warranty against mis-issuance (up to €250,000 for EV); (2) Organisation validation — EV and OV certificates verify your legal entity; (3) Validity period — Let's Encrypt certificates last 90 days (auto-renewed), commercial certificates last 1 year; (4) Site seal — commercial certificates include a trust seal you can display on your site.

  • Yes. Every Soelem shared hosting, WordPress hosting, and VPS plan includes free Let's Encrypt SSL. It is automatically installed when you add a domain, and automatically renewed every 90 days. You do not need to do anything. If you want a commercial certificate with a warranty and site seal instead, you can purchase one and we will install it in place of Let's Encrypt.

  • Free Let's Encrypt: instant, issued automatically. Standard DV commercial certificate: within minutes to 2 hours after domain validation. Wildcard SSL: within minutes to 2 hours after DNS validation. EV SSL: 1-5 business days for organisation vetting, then issued immediately once approved.

  • A Wildcard SSL certificate (*.yourdomain.com) secures your root domain plus unlimited first-level subdomains — app., api., admin., blog., etc. — with a single certificate. You need one if you run multiple subdomains and want to manage one certificate instead of many. Wildcard does not cover second-level subdomains (e.g. it does not cover staging.app.yourdomain.com).

  • When an SSL certificate expires, browsers immediately show a full-screen warning blocking access to your site. This will cause an immediate drop in traffic and conversions. That is why we configure auto-renewal on all certificates we manage — free Let's Encrypt certificates renew automatically every 60-75 days, and commercial certificates are renewed before their annual expiry date.

  • Yes. Since you have full root access on VPS plans, you can install any SSL certificate from any provider. You can use certbot for Let's Encrypt, or manually install a commercial certificate via your web server config (Nginx, Apache, Caddy, etc.). We also support custom certificates on shared hosting plans — contact support with your certificate files and we will install it.
